WORLD /Hyderabad, India – This video recorded via a cell phone will disturb you.

At least three students were brutally caned and beaten by a man, reported by OneIndia News to be the teacher but is later identified as the principal of the school.

Principal also visually impaired

The visually-impaired children can be heard crying and screaming for leniency but the principal who is also visually-impaired ignored their pleas. Another man, whose identity was initially unknown, is seen in the video to aid the teacher in holding up the children. It is also not known who recorded the incident, which has since gone viral and reported on NDTV and other local news channels.

NDTV initially reported that the police says the man who is seen caning the children runs the Greenfield Residential School for visually challenged children. Hindustani Times confirmed his identity as the school principal, Srinivas, and the other man as the school’s secretary, KV Rao. Both have been arrested based on complaints from parents and public, who knew of the situation through local media reports and screening of the video footage in the local news.

Parents thrashed principal

The police acted after parents protested and physically attacked the principal and the school secretary at the school. It was reported “some parents entered the school’s office room and thrashed the principal. They hurled chairs at him and pushed him towards the exit before police could intervene.”

School Secretary Rao admitted they beat up the students because the children were making noise. He also justified the beating by saying it is necessary to punish those who made noise.

The district administration has taken over the private school as of now.

A bigger problem with teacher violence in India

There have been many cases of teachers beating students in India. Last year, a 15-year old boy committed suicide after being beaten by his teacher till his hands swelled. His parents were also forced to pay 5,000 rupees (USD 83) because the boy broke a school bench. A nine-year-old boy died when he was assaulted by his teacher who repeatedly banged the child’s head against the wall. Another case reported last year also resulted in the death of a 12-year-old student, whose teacher beat him to death because the cricket ball he threw damaged the teacher’s bicycle. The boy’s mother said the deceased often complained many teachers have beaten him before the tragic incident.

It is not known if investigations concluded with conviction or acquittal. The 2013 corruption ranking by World Audit ranked India 75th out of 150 countries in the standing.
